The Alpaca Maturity Concept
This show is for animals over 3 years old because we think it is time that mature animals took a place on the stage of the show system. The idea of having animals with long-term production is what drew many people into the alpaca business. "Oh, they're so cute." Is what many of us said and then we touched the animals. "Oh, they're so soft" was our next statement. We looked at the ways in which other livestock businesses made money, through slaughter many times, and then saw that our own animals grew a renewable cash crop every year. We saw the value of raising and selling seed stock to others but knew that eventually the business would mature into a fiber business, as it has in South America. That time has come for many of us. We have fiber in our barns or are marketing it in various ways, but that's not enough. We need a long-term fiber industry. We need animals that can produce the same high consistency of fiber for years and years if we are going to interest the textile industry in the US. In other words we need the fiber to be a real CASH CROP. But how do you determine a cash crop? Not by looking at the newest yearling on someone's farm, at least not from the point of view of a person operating a textile mill. A cash crop is something that can be counted on year after year to be the same quality, the same product. Long-term sustainable product is what the manufacturer will buy. But how do you determine that product? We felt that a show for the more complete production animal was in order. As breeders we need a way to show others we are raising animals that maintain their fiber and conformation for years. Therefore we are putting on The Alpaca Maturity. Classes Stalling
